Avalanche Safety

Snowboard avalanche safety gear is absolutely necessary when boarding off trail in deep snow. Every rider in the group needs this stuff too. It doesn't do you any good if Johnny has the shovel and he's the one that gets buried in the avalanche.

The key components of required gear for travelling in the backcountry include transceiver, shovel and probe. Once you get this gear, take the time and make sure everyone knows how to use it. Do a group activity and see who can find the stuffed dummy first (Pants and shirt stuffed with newspaper and buried 4 feet under snow). Try using a transceiver first, then try with just probes.
