How to Pick The Right Size of SnowboardSo
you are ready to purchase your snowboard - one of the frequently asked questions
is: What length board is best for me. Keep in mind that snowboard width is also
very important.
Snowboard Length and WidthThe
right size of snowboard is more or less determined by terrain, conditions and
most of all, personal preference. The overall greater length will yield a board
that can be controlled at and attain greater speeds. The longer boards perform
better and float more in powder due to their increased surface area. Shorter boards
are more maneuverable and offer a lower swing weight.
The
general formula is: Your height (inches) x 2.54 x 0.88 = Suggested
Board Length
| Rider
Height | Board Length (Centimeters) | | 4'0" | 109
cm | | 4'2" | 114
- 120 cm | | 4'4" | 115
- 125 cm | | 4'6" | 118
- 135 cm | | 4'8" | 120
- 135 cm | | 5'0" | 130
- 142 cm | | 5'2" | 135
- 145 cm | | 5'4" | 140
- 148 cm | | 5'6" | 145
- 152 cm | | 5'8" | 147
- 155 cm | | 5'10" | 154
- 163 cm | | 6'0" | 157
- 165 cm | | 6'1" | 160
- 168 cm | | 6'2" | +
159 cm or greater |
Snowboard WidthA
snowboard that is too narrow in relation to a rider's boot will cause toe and
heel drag. With a board that is too wide, the rider will not be able to put adequate
pressure on the toe and heel edge, creating an unresponsive ride.
Use
the following chart to gauge the relationship between your boot size and respective
board waist width:
| Boot
Size | 8 or Smaller | 8.5 - 10.5 | 10.5
or Larger | | Board Width | 24
cm or less | 24 - 26 cm | 26 cm or More | | (At
Waist) | (Narrow) | (Regular) | (Wide) |
Women's
snowboards are designed for riders lower center of gravity, smaller foot size,
and lighter weight. Snowboarder weight is also important in determining the
board size. When a heavier rider purchases a board that is too short, the board
will have a tendency to "wash-out" or perform poorly, especially at
higher speeds. A lighter person on a longer board will usually have problems controlling
the board and initiating turns.
Comparing Snowboard
HeightTo find the correct length for you, start by comparing it to your height.
When holding the board on its end, a short board will come up somewhere between
your color bones and chin. They are easier to maneuver, great to learn on and
preferred by riders who do a lot of trick, park and pipe riding. A medium length
snowboard standing on end will come up between your chin and nose. This length
is for the snowboarders who ride a variety of terrain, including parks and steeps. Long
snowboards go from eye-level to several inches over the top of the head. These
snowboards are for the riders who like the high-speed carving, deep powder and
big mountain terrain.
ConclusionPlease keep
in mind that these are just general guidelines to follow in picking out the correct
snowboard for you. When standing in riding position, your boots should be flush
or slightly over the edges of the snowboard. Snowboard length has some room for
personal preference; board width is directly tied to your foot size. | | |
